Urgent Conditions and After Hours Illness For situations in which you become injured or seriously ill, but the condition is NOT life threatening, we recommend that you contact your Primary Care Physician. (All physicians have a 24 answering system for situations in which you need to reach him/her after office hours). Your physician will then advise you as to the appropriate treatment indicated for your condition, such as an emergency room visit, an office visit the next day and/or home treatment. Emergencies “An EMERGENCY is defined as a sudden and unexpected illness or injury which, if not treated immediately, can cause serious harm or threaten the life of the patient.” If you become seriously ill contact your Primary Care Physician immediately. You can reach your Primary Care Physician at the telephone number listed on the enclosed MHCA Primary Care Physician Roster. (All physicians have a 24-hour answering system for situations in which you need to reach him/her after office hours.) Your physician will instruct you how to treat your condition and, if emergency treatment is necessary, you will be directed to a specific hospital emergency room. All follow-up care must be provided or arranged by your Primary Care Physician. In situations where you feel you can’t call your PCP, such as when you think you may be having a heart attack or a stroke, go directly to the nearest hospital emergency room. Notify your Primary Care Physician as soon as possible of any treatment you receive. All follow-up care must be provided or arranged by your Primary Care Physician. Your policy may require a co-payment for emergency room services. Your HMO policy handbook will provide additional information regarding co-payment responsibility.
